PCBN is an abbreviation for Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride which is a composite formed by sintering together carefully selected cBN particles at very high temperature and pressure in the presence of a metal/ceramic catalyst binder material. The end product is a solid, homogeneous layer of PCBN that displays a unique combination of hardness, toughness and thermo-chemical stability, properties which are increasingly important in a cutting tool material to meet the demands of machining hard ferrous materials.
This composite cBN layer can be synthesised either as free-standing solid material or with a tungsten carbide backing.
